Solo female travel is at an all-time high, and the data backs it up — most major tourist destinations report similar safety outcomes for women as for men, with the right preparation. Here are the countries that combine the lowest US advisory levels with the strongest solo-traveler infrastructure in 2026.

How we ranked these

We used three inputs:

  1. US State Department advisory level (Level 1 preferred)
  2. Solo-female-traveler survey data from major travel platforms
  3. Infrastructure signals — well-lit cities, reliable transit, low street harassment reports

The 2026 rankings

1. Iceland

  • Advisory: Level 1 — Normal Precautions
  • Why: Tiny population, low violent crime, English widely spoken. Reykjavik is one of the safest capital cities in the world for solo walkers at night.

2. New Zealand

  • Advisory: Level 1
  • Why: Friendly locals, well-marked trails, strong solo-trekking culture. The Great Walk huts are designed for solo travelers.

3. Japan

  • Advisory: Level 1
  • Why: Low violent crime, exceptionally safe transit, women-only rail cars in major cities. Late-night solo dining in Tokyo is genuinely normal.

4. Portugal

  • Advisory: Level 1
  • Why: Compact cities walkable end-to-end, strong cafe culture for solo diners, low street harassment. Lisbon and Porto both rank in the top 10 safest European cities for 2026.

5. Switzerland

  • Advisory: Level 1
  • Why: Clean cities, reliable transit, well-marked hiking. Solo train travel across the country is one of the easiest in the world.

6. Slovenia

  • Advisory: Level 1
  • Why: Often overlooked, but ticks every solo-female box — small, walkable, photogenic, and very safe. Ljubljana's city center is essentially a pedestrian zone.

7. Canada

  • Advisory: Level 1
  • Why: Familiar infrastructure, easy transit, low language barrier. Montreal and Vancouver are both established solo-female-traveler hubs.

8. Singapore

  • Advisory: Level 1
  • Why: Extremely clean, very low crime, excellent transit. Solo street food in hawker centers is the norm.

Tips for any solo trip

  • Stay in central neighborhoods your first time in any city, even if the rate is higher.
  • Share your itinerary with a trusted contact before you go.
  • Trust your instincts — if a street or situation feels off, leave.
  • Use registered taxis or rideshare apps late at night.
  • Carry a copy of your passport separately from the original.

The bottom line: solo female travel is safer than the media narrative suggests. Pick a Level 1 country, plan your first 48 hours in detail, and you'll almost certainly come home planning the next trip.
